The decision by the owner of Hedgehog Foods Ltd, Philip Lewis, to produce "hedgehog flavoured" crisps in 1981 made some young animal lovers angry, because they feared that the crisps were made from real hedgehog!
They were actually flavoured with pork fat and in 1982, Britain's Office of Fair Trading hauled Mr Lewis into court for false advertising.
Lewis tried to produce "evidence" by interviewing gypsies as to what "baked hedgehog" tasted like and commisioned a flavourings expert to duplicate the flavour.
Newspaper advertisements said:
"Bristling with flavour!
Hedgehog flavoured crisps on sale now.
Savour all the flavour
Of traditional country fare!
The taste of hedgehog baked in clay
A taste so delicate and rare."Lewis later had to change the labels from "hedgehog flavoured" to "hedgehog flavour" - which was thought to be a less misleading term.
