Weird 80s songs
« on: August 31, 2007, 14:11:07 PM »
What do you think is the weirdist 80s song you've ever heard, or just general weird 80s songs, I don't think anything will beat Lullaby by The Cure, here are the lyrics to prove it
The Cure - Lullaby Lyrics

spy something begining with S.......

On candystripe legs the spiderman comes
Softly through the shadow of the evening sun
Stealing past the windows of the blissfully dead
Looking for the victim shivering in bed
Searching out fear in the gathering gloom and
Suddenly!
A movement in the corner of the room!
And there is nothing I can do
And I realise with fright
That the spiderman is having me for dinner tonight!

Quietly he laughs and shaking his head
Creeps closer now
Closer to the foot of the bed
And softer than shadow and quicker than flies
His arms are around me and his tongue in my eyes
"Be still be calm be quiet now my precious boy
Don't struggle like that or I will only love you more"
But it's much too late to get away or turn on the light
The spiderman is having you for dinner tonight

And I feel like I'm being eaten
By a thousand million shivering furry holes
And I know that in the morning I will wake up
In the shivering cold

The spiderman is always hungry...

Some Duran Duran songs also have pretty strange metafors (but the songs all sound normal an d commercial offcourse).
If they're strange, they're probably about sex ;D (I think)

The cure are offcourse a bunch of pretty strange people..normal songs of them...that would be a shock  :uglystupid2:

Thats true enough, The Forest is pretty weird as well, but nothing beats this tune for weirdness.

the weirder the better as far as i am concerned...

this was actually the reason i got into Bauhaus...i read some lyrics before i had even heard the music and thought i just have to hear this...

A gut pull drag on me
Into the chasm gaping we
Mirrors multy reflecting this
Between spunk stained sheet
And odourous whim
Calmer eye- flick- shudder- within
Assist me to walk away in sin
Where is the string that theseus laid
Find me out this labyrinth place

I do get bored, I get bored
In the flat field
I get bored, I do get bored
In the flat field

Yin and yang lumber punch
Go taste a tart then eat my lunch
And force my slender thin and lean
In this solemn place of fill wetting dreams
Of black matted lace of pregnant cows
As life maps out onto my brow Instant Song Lyrics
The card is lowered in index turn
Into my filing cabinet hemispheres spurn

I do get bored, I get bored
In the flat field
I get bored, I do get bored
In the flat field

Let me catch the slit of light
For a maiden's sake
On a maiden flight
In the flat field I do get bored
Replace with picadilly leg spreaders
In my yearn for some cerebral fix
Transfer me to that solid plain
Moulding shapes no shame to waste
Moulding shapes no shame to waste
And drag me there with deafening haste

any song with the word spunk in it has to be worth a listen  :2funny:

i think it has some reference to shagging prostitutes, which several Bauhaus tracks share...i don't think Big Pete Murphy and the boys were getting much action in downtown Northampton and were resorting to the most cost effective method of getting to know a lady...

What about Nik Kershaw's The Riddle? I have no clue what he means.

I got two strong arms blessings of babylon
with time to carry on and try
for sins and false alarms
so to america the brave

wise men save
near a tree by a river
there's a hole in the ground
where an old man of aran
goes around and around
and his mind is a beacon
in the veil of the night
for a strange kind of fashion
there's a wrong and a right

near a tree by a river
there's a hole in the ground
where an old man of Aran
goes around and around
and his mind is a beacon
in the veil of the night
for a strange kind of fashion
there's a wrong and a right
but he'll never, never fight over you

near a tree by a river
there's a hole in the ground
where an old man of aran
goes around and around
and his mind is a beacon
in the veil of the night
for a strange kind of fashion
there's a wrong and a right

near a tree by a river
there's a hole in the ground
where an old man of Aran
goes around and around
and his mind is a beacon
in the veil of the night
for a strange kind of fashion
there's a wrong and a right
but he'll never, never fight over you

i got plans for us
nights in the scullery
and days instead of me
i only know what to discuss
of for anything but light
wise men fighting over you

it's not me you see
pieces of valentine
with just a song of mine
to keep from burning history
seasons of gasoline and gold

wise men fold
near a tree by a river
there's a hole in the ground
where an old man of aran
goes around and around
and his mind is a beacon
in the veil of the night
for a strange kind of fashion
there's a wrong and a right
but he'll never, never fight over you

i got time to kill
sly looks in corridors
without a plan of yours
a blackbird sings on bluebird hill
thanks to the calling of the wild wise mens child.

I think at the time - he let it be known that if the riddle was solved then there was some sort of big prize. My sister-in-law who was a big Nik Kershaw fan (Her youngest daughter is called Nikki after him) - spent weeks going over the lyrics. It started to bug me that I could not solve it either.
Many years later it was admitted that there was never a riddle - and that the lyrics were just put in to sound strange and moody. - I was not happy when I found out.

LOL, must have pissed himself, people trying to solve an non existent riddle, Howard Jones was far better.

Another weird song, Kate Bush's Babooshka, lyrics

She wanted to test her husband.
She knew exactly what to do:
A pseudonym to fool him.
She couldn't have made a worse move.

She sent him scented letters,
And he received them with a strange delight.
Just like his wife
But how she was before the tears,
And how she was before the years flew by,
And how she was when she was beautiful.
She signed the letter

"All yours,
Babooshka, Babooshka, Babooshka-ya-ya!
All yours,
Babooshka, Babooshka, Babooshka-ya-ya!"

She wanted to take it further,
So she arranged a place to go,
To see if he
Would fall for her incognito.
And when he laid eyes on her,
He got the feeling they had met before.
Uncanny how she
Reminds him of his little lady,
Capacity to give him all he needs,
Just like his wife before she freezed on him,
Just like his wife when she was beautiful.
He shouted out, "I'm

All yours,
Babooshka, Babooshka, Babooshka-ya-ya!
All yours,
Babooshka, Babooshka, Babooshka-ya-ya!
All yours,
Babooshka, Babooshka, Babooshka-ya-ya!"

I agree Howard Jones was far better - I saw him perform  live in Basildon in the 1990s - and it was a fantastic concert (even better because I won the tickets, so it was free), I was surprised by how many hits he had had.

I'd have said it was completely non-weird.

A narrative song about a jealous wife who sets out to trap her husband.

Incidentally, Baboushka is Russian for 'little lady'.
Bang bang, the mighty fall ...
