WHAT WAS THE FIRST 12 " single you ever bought.......?
« on: March 24, 2009, 19:34:29 PM »
......and what was the story behind it ??

I ask because the best answers could go into my latest book 'Is that the twelve inch mix' !
The book is not only about the history of the 12" single (& the remix) but also about those that are entirely obsessed with 80s music.

More info soon, but I intend to have any many anecdotes in there as possible - some great ones so far (including offerings from the likes of Stephen Singleton - ex-ABC).

...and Blue Monday has been done !

Have a think !

cheers

1989, aged 14, i'd just fallen in love with Holly Johnson's solo stuff and discovered he had been in a band called Frankie goes to Hollywood!

i went to my local Music and Video exchange and asked if they had any Frankie..they pointed me in the direction of the 12" section and an obssession was formed!  ;D

i think i bought WTTP and one version of Two Tribes that trip..discovering all the different versions was like going on an exploration to some strange new world and i never looked back!  :smitten:

i kept a diary in those days and if i can remember where i've put it, i know it's got some great teenage thoughts on the music i was discovering!  ::)  ;D

How adulating...a biography.

Egotistical banter aside, I'm the turntable virgin of PEC.  'Twas a preoccupation with Breathe that impelled me to delve into the media of yesteryear.  So, in answer to your inquest, 'Jonah' and 'Don't Tell Me Lies' (SRN 11-12) were my first acquisitions.  They layed the foundation for what promises to be a lifelong venture.
80's aficionado extraordinaire!

I can't remember my first, but the most vivid were TFF, especially the multiple coloured vinyls of Pale Shelter, and Prince's 1999 as it was a US import & twice the weight of any that I'd owned before.

I also have memories of a 12" that had loads of samples, cuts & beats on the B side so that you could make your own mix of the A side.

Lastly, on a totally separate subject, I remember buying a Level 42 CD single that was (IIRC) the first to be released as a combined audio CD & video single.

I'm quite happy for my screen moniker to be used mate. I'll also try to remember the name of that one with the samples - I'm sure that Glenn Gregory did the vocals.

I think (in fact I am almost sure):

It was Amii Stewart - Knock On Wood - and it was clear vinyl - getting excited there! :D - can't remember why! + couldn't begin to tell you were it may be now!

I think I had a thing about coloured vinyl etc. I remember I had Pat Benetar 7"EP (remember them! ???) - + that was red!

One of the first 12" records I brought was the Dazz Band - let it all blow

I begged and begged for someone to get it me for christmas but with no success so I had to buy it myself

Still a great track to this day!
