Mojo's top 80s albums
« on: July 13, 2007, 20:58:25 PM »
Mojo magazine has just done an 80s supplement and in it it lists its top albums of the 80s.  For your entertainment I thought I'd list them, with the occasional notes (by me).

They are in chronological order and if I own the album I've given it a  :) if I think it's really good it gets between 1 and 3 of these little chaps  O0

Adam & the Ants - Kings of the Wild Frontier (I was a bit too old to get into the Ants. It was like a kids album when I was a mid-teen. In retrospect though, I like 'em)

The Cramps - Songs the Lord Taught Us  :)  O0 (My fave early 80s t-shirt was a Cramps one)

Diana Ross - Diana  (The one that has Upside Down and Old Piano. Miss Ross's swansong)

Joy Division - Closer   :)  O0  (I'm going to shock JD purists and say I prefer the rawer sound of Unknown Pleasures)

Linton Kwesi Johnson - Bass Culture  :)  O0 O0 O0 (Wahey! I thought I was the only person ever to have heard this album. Top dub, reggae, lovers rock and even ska)

AC/DC - Back In Black

The Specials - More Specials (Certainly on the wants list. Terry Hall is Two Tone's wittiest lyricist)

The Jam - Sound Affects (I used to love the Jam, but sadly, the magic faded ...)

Dead Kennedys - Dead Fruit For Rotting Vegetables    :) O0 (the best US punk album ever)

David Bowie - Scary Monsters   :) O0 O0 O0  (A top album from a top artist. Side 1 matches any album of any time IMO)

Black Uhuru - Red  :)

Black Flag - Damaged

The Teardrop Explodes - Kilimanjaro    :) O0 (Super stuff. In 1981 I was mid-Somerset's own Julian Cope. Well I had the threads and haircut ...)

OMD - Architecture & Morality  :)  O0

Brian Eno & David Byrne - My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts  :)  O0 O0 O0  (Yes, yes, yes. the first album with sampling and still a lesson to all in how to use it to spooky effect)

Japan - Tin Drum    :)  O0

Kraftwerk - Computer World  (On me wants list)

The Police - Ghost In The Machine  :)

Grace Jones - Nightclubbing  (Grace is fab)

Soft Cell - Non Stop Erotic Cabaret  :) O0  (This album blew me away - no dirty jokes please - when it was released.)

Siouxsie & the Banshees - Ju-Ju    :) O0

Motorhead - No Sleep Til Hammersmith

Simple Minds - Sons and Fascination  :)

Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast

ABC - The Lexicon of Love  :)  O0  (A valentine's day present to my first serious gf. Awwww)

Donald cigaretteen - Nightfly

Elvis Costello - Imperial Bedroom  :)

Richard & Linda Thompson - Shot Out The Lights

The Clash - Combat Rock    :)  (Like the Jam, my affection for the Clash just waned over time)

Orange Juice - You Can't Hide Your Love Forever

The Cure - Pornography   :) O0 O0  (Never listen to this album when depressed! lol)

The Birthday Party - Junkyard   :)  (the EPs are better)

The The - Soul Mining   :)  O0 O0 O0  (Sheer class)

Aztec Camera - High Land Hard Rain  (Never got the appeal of AC)

King Sunny Ade - Juju Music

Aswad - Live and Direct

Lloyd Cole & the Commotions - Rattlesnakes  :)  (The various Best Ofs give you a rounder picture of this band)

Bruce Springsteen - Born in the USA   (Oh dear)

Echo & the Bunnymen - Ocean Rain    :)  (Naaah. now if they'd said Heaven Up Here ...)

The Smiths - Hatful Of Hollow    :)  O0 O0 O0  (More like it! Another album that blew me away and changed my life.)

REM - Reckoning    :)

Youssou N'Dour - Immigres

Minutemen - Double Nickels On the Dime  (I have an unlabelled Minutemen album on cassette. This could be it.)

Cocteau Twins - Treasure   :) O0

Dexy's Midnight Runners - Don't Stand Me Down  (crap era Dexys. Rowlands moos like a terrified heifer on this record)

Husker Du - New Day Rising

Prefab Sprout - Steve McQueen  (A pet hate)

The Pogues - Rum, Sodomy & the Lash  (dance music for people who can't dance)

Kate Bush - the Hounds of Love  :) O0  (I thought Bush was off her crust when this album came out, but it's a grower and that's a fact)

Jesus & Mary Chain - Psychocandy   :) (Hasn't aged well)

The Colourfield - Virgins and Philistines   (Dull)

John Zorn - Spillane  (you what?)

Tom Waits - Rain Dogs

New Order - Low Life

Martin Stephenson & the Daintees - Boat To Bolivia  (Boring, worthy)

The Fall - This Nation's Saving Grace    :) O0 O

Big Black - Atomizer   (Prefer the second album Songs About f**king)

Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares   O0 (Every hip mid 80s household had this 4AD atmostastic album. mines lost. want a new one please!!!)

Public Image Ltd - Album

Metallica - Master of the Puppets  (Oh dear)

Guns N'Roses - Appetite for Destruction  :)

U2 - the Joshua Tree   :)

Prince - Sign O'The Times

Happy Mondays - Bummed   :) (the rudest inner cover ever. Prefer the next album by them)

My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything  :)  (like the Glider EP but this album, interesting though it is, is overrated IMO)

Steve Earle - Copperhead Road

Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation    :) O0

The House of Love - the House of Love    :) O0 O0 (Why aren't bands this good any more?)

Mudhoney - Superfuzz Bigmuff  :) O0

NWA - Straight Outta Compton

Spaceman 3 - Playing With Fire  :) O0

Interestingly, the only mention of Phil Collins in Mojo is in the list of Five Worst Albums Of The 80s.

But Seriously ... takes #2 place.  ;)

Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares    (Every hip mid 80s household had this 4AD atmostastic album. mines lost. want a new one please!!! - been trying to get my hands on this for about 3 years - big Pete Murphy of Bauhaus is credited with discoverng this - haunting pleasures of audio)

Richard & Linda Thompson - Shot Out The Lights (Yanks i presume?)

English folkies, Nick.  I think - & I may be wrong here - that Richard was in the better-known band Fairport Convention.

I don't know much about Richard Thompson (never having heard his solo music) but I know that lots of muso type guitarists really rate him.

AS far as Lloyd Cole & the Commotions - Rattlesnakes goes, I found your comment 'The various Best Ofs give you a rounder picture of this band' to be a bit puzzling. I always thought this was an album that defined The Commotions sound, which unfortunately Lloyd Cole abandoned in his quest to be the indie worlds answer to Elvis doing Christian country and western.

I think this was THE album for them. They peaked early, and couldn't figure out how to do it again, which is a problem many bands have. Faith No More did it with The Real Thing (their second album), Hoodoo Gurus did it with Mars Needs Guitars (again their second album) a-Ha never really topped Hunting High and Low(and they certainly lost their English speaking audience with ther second album). It must be awful to have an initial hit record that you spend the rest of your life persuing the success of!!
Don't read this, read my review for Lesbian Vampire Killers!!

Unfortunately, JR, fine album that it is, Rattlesnakes doesn't contain Jennifer She Said - my favourite LC song. So I'll be sticking with 1984-1989.  O0
