It was Morrissey on the marvellous Smiths song "Paint A Vulgar Picture" who sang about the sickening greed of record companies seeking to profit over the death of rock stars.
"At the record company meeting
On their hands - a dead star
and oh, the plans that they weave," noted Moz.
I think he possibly had Marc Bolan in mind for that song.
Since Marc died in a car crash, record companies have sought to cash in with endless T Rex greatest hits albums.
It was once suggested that "Death is a good career move" - meaning that for pop stars their status as 'rock gods' grow if they die prematurely.
Billy Mackenzie, lead singer with 80's new wave band The Associates, is one guy that hasn't so far been mentioned on this thread.
Mackenzie, from Dundee, had a striking falsetto voice which he used to good effect on top 20 hits like 'Party Fears Two' and 'Club Country'.
The precise reasons for his tragic suicide are unclear, although the earlier death of his mother was said to be one factor. Shortly before his 40th birthday, Billy became withdrawn and depressed - only venturing outside his house to walk the greyhounds that he loved.
There has since been a biography written called: "The Glamour Chase: The Maverick Life of Billy Mackenzie" , which I haven't yet read myself, but which may shed some light on Billy's depression.
The book can be seen at: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0747536155/ref=ase_wwwlink-software-21/202-2610371-7191859 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0747536155/ref=ase_wwwlink-software-21/202-2610371-7191859)
(I know that you shouldn't really speak ill of the dead - but personally I thought that 'Divine' - who was mentioned by AndrewR on the opening post of this thread was quite dreadful as a singer. His/Her Top 40 hits "Walk Like A Man" and "You Think You're A Man" were in my opinion two of the worst records of the 1980's. I thought they were ghastly.)
-
Fair does SoftCell - but Divine and Sylvester were part (the front?)of a large group of people who created their own little world which probably helped a lot of future bands and styles to be accepted ...
IMHO
-
His/Her Top 40 hits "Walk Like A Man" and "Think Like A Man" were in my opinion two of the worst records of the 1980's
Just got a title slightly wrong there - his biggest hit was 'You Think You're A Man' (reaching #16) 8).
-
Woops! I made a mistake there - but the records were so bad that I've been doing my best to forget them!
-

Although the tracks weren't brilliant, I don't think I'd go as far as to say they were ghastly.
There is some worse stuff around at the moment!!
-
Gallery updated with suggested names
(Those who had hits in the 80s anyway ;D)
-
Excellent thread, Billy Mackenzie will be always special to me , if i had to pick my fave song from the 80s i wld defo pick "party fears 2" by "the Associates" he is very sadly missed.
-
What about a mention for Gene Anthony Ray (Leroy in Kids from Fame) who sadly died not too long ago. :'(
He featured on the Kids from Fame singles 'Hi Fidelity', 'Starmaker' and anothe one I can't quite recall, but I did actually buy all the singles. Must dig the old 45s out tomorrow! ;D
-
Good idea - thanks Anj. He's been added to the gallery :)
-
real shame about Maurice Gibb , could'nt believe it when that happened ! :'(

-
Just added 4 new photos:
Melanie Susan Appleby (of Mel & Kim)
Alan Barton (Black Lace)
The London Boys
Philip Lynott (Thin Lizzy)
If the gallery gets much bigger I will put it on my website instead!!
-
Someone who died recently .... I cannot remember his name nor his nicname/band. However, they are a UK rap act. His hit had the classic line...
"is he a yankee, no I'm a Londoner"
-
That was Rebel MC and 'Street Tuff'.
-
As far as I'm aware, Rebel MC is still alive. I'll check up on that though.
Photo of Jam Master Jay (Run DMC) has been added.
-
Ok, with the band name, I found this out..
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/167209.stm
-
Also, dont forget Linda Mccartney, who was an "esential" part of Paul's band
-
And a few more:
Jermaine Stewart: "We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off,"
Dan Hartman: "I can dream about you" "Instant Replay"
Steve Clark: Guitarist from def Leppard
-
I have updated the gallery. Sadly Linda McCartney can't be included as she didn't have any hits (herself or with Wings) in the 80s.
-
Just added 4 new photos:
Melanie Susan Appleby (of Mel & Kim)
Alan Barton (Black Lace)
The London Boys
Philip Lynott (Thin Lizzy)

I didn't know Alan of Black lace was dead. When and how did he die? I met Black Lace in Blackpool in 1985 or 86.
-
He was killed in a car crash in 1995, shortly after joining the group Smokie.
-
Thanks for that Andrew.
Its really sad when you look at the gallery of people who died young :'(
Life is definitely 2 short! :(
-
Thanks for maintaining this thread. Here's a few more..
Nina Simone - has hit in 87 with My Baby just Cares for me
Barry White - err.. I think he had hits in the 80s...
Bobby Hatfield - Righteous Bros - not sure he had an 80s hit
John Entwistle (The Who)
Sam Cooke - Wonderful world
Bing Crosby - Has hit with Bowie in 1982
Andy Gibb
-
Really a late 70s artist but he was still going in the 80s I think you should add Sylvester of You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) fame.
Also Tracey Pugh ("the paunchy cowboy") of The Birthday Party. Nick Cave's first band.
-
The gallery has been updated with those who had 80s hits (including Sam Cooke and Bing Crosby who died in the 60s and 70s respectively).
Thanks for contributing folks. :)
-
A few more ...
Karen Carpenter - I think they had a 1981 hit ... touch me when we're dancing.
Frank sinatra - Didnt he have a mids 80s hit with NY, NY?
Bernard Edwards (Chic) & post- 1986 Duran Duran, I think...
Level 42 member who died from Aids... can anyone remember the name?
-

are we talking about SYLVESTER of 83' ...the differance between "good and bad speaker" test song, lol ...of " do you wanna funk " :o ...i liked that song ! :'(
and completely agreeing with ANJ here on her last.....it's scary, but also pretty wierd...why so many ,so young. ???
-
in reply to the person who thought the rebel mc is dead, he isnt , wot you are thinkin of is that the song "street tuff" was credited to "Double trouble" featuring the rebel mc! and it was someone who was in doube trouble that died a few years back, his name i cant recall sorry.

;)
-
And both RIP threads will be merged when the gallery is finished ;D

Laura Brannigan has died of a brain aneurysm aged 47.
Sad news, Cam.
I thought her 1984 track "Self Control" was excellent. (It reached number 4 in the UK charts.)
"Gloria" (perhaps her most famous record) wasn't a bad song either. 'Gloria' reached number 6 in the UK charts in 1982, and was a very big hit in her native USA, reaching number 2 in the American charts.
She has died at the very young age of 47 in her home at New York.
R.I.P :(
-
He probably wasn't much of a singer but Brian Clough's gone too.
-
Brian Clough was a great bloke-told it like it is.Will be sadly missed by many.RIP and god bless x x x x

Just read on the net that DJ John Peel has died of a heart attack whilst on holiday in Peru.
Very sad.
-
Just read on the net that DJ John Peel has died of a heart attack whilst on holiday in Peru.
Very sad.
Yes - very sad.
Without him, we might not have heard of The Undertones and many other punk and indie bands from the late 70's /early 80's
-
I think his influence went far beyond that Shy. He was sort of at the masthead of virtually every musical trend from 1966 to 1990-ish.
RIP John. :'(
-

RIP John. :'(
Mine was a slightly personal perspective ;D
-
I used to stay up late on a school night to listen to Peelie in the late 70s/early 80s and tape his show.
Of course, the country town I grew up in never had a shop that sold the cool music that he played, but nevertheless it was an eye-opener for me.
Darn it, I'm off to play the first Fall album in tribute. 8)
-
Just read on the net that DJ John Peel has died of a heart attack whilst on holiday in Peru.
Very sad.
Yes - very sad.
I agree :'(
-
I am deeply saddened by "Peely's" death..he was a legend on the radio!
I remember he played such a varied mix of music on his show, and sounded so laid back all the time!
Jonzun Crew- Space Is The Place i heard for the first time on his show, along with loads of indie/new wave stuff..
a sad day for all music fans...
-
On the other locked topic somebody was forgotten.
Frank Zappa!
and also the leadsinger from the Gratefull Death
-
I'd say that's a negative...
-
sorry, i've been told i'm not allowed to advertise on here, so for the record Gary Numan MAY HAVE GOT HIS BREAK ON THE PEEL SHOW BUT JUST FORGET I EVER SAID IT. IS THAT Ok MODERATOR?
Dude, just let it go and enjoy the site and the folks.
-
I didnt realise until last night that former CHIC & POWER STATION drummer TONY THOMPSON died less than two months after Robert Palmer, his former band mate in the Power Station.
He sadly died of cancer aged 48.

Returned "Back to Nature",
a cherished man,

-
We should ad Alan Murphy of Level 42 to the list. He died of aids october 29 1989.
-
I will add Patty Donahue, lead singer of The Waitresses. They did the songs "I Know what Boys Like" and "Christmas Wrapping." She died in 1996 of cancer at age 40.
-
I have just read that Tommy Vance has died from a stroke at the age of 63.
R.I.P
-
Tommy Vance dead .... oh dear...
We should spare a thought for Edwin Collins ..currently in a coma with a brain aneuryism.
-
another one of the great DJs ever has gone . Tommy Vance was a GOD of the radio . He was a no-nonsence type of guy who just loved music . One of the few DJs that promoted rock music while most others were happy to play it safe with more mainstream kinds of music . he will be sadly missed , and with the loss of John Peel not long ago we have lost 2 DJs that will be hard to replace . RIP both of them .

Crowded house drummer Paul Hester has sadly taken his own life!!!

Perhaps Andrew can open up the gallery to add his picture alongside that of another Drummer whose abscence from there has been noted the late great Pete De Freitas of EATB , fame.
-

Singer Ron Tabak of the Canadian band Prism. He was originally fired from the band in 1981 and in 1984, he succumbed to a brain hemhorrage caused by a bicycle accident :(
(http://www.jimvallance.com/01-music-folder/images-for-music-pages/images-music-pages/img-prism-ron-tabak-ron.jpg)
Prism were very successful in Canada with 7 albums 1977-1983, but they sadly did not become internationally successful. They did reach the US top 40 though with the song Don't Let Him Know in 1982, which was the first Prism song to feature new vocalist Henry Small
-
How about Eria Fachin? She was a Canadian who in 1988 hit international stardom with her club smashes Savin' Myself and I Hear A Symphony. In the mid 90's, she passed away from Cancer

RIP Benny Hill's 'straight man' Henry McGee :(
Henry McGee, the actor best known as the stooge in the Benny Hill TV show, has
died at the age of 77, his agent confirmed today.
McGee spent 20 years in various roles as Benny Hill's on-screen partner.
He also became known to millions when he was cast alongside the Honey Monster
in the Sugar Puffs TV commercial.
McGee's agent Lynda Ronan said the London-born actor had been suffering from
Alzheimer's.
She said: "Henry McGee died on Saturday at the age of 77. He been diagnosed
with Alzheimer's and had been in a nursing home for the last six months."
McGee came from a theatrical family dating back to an 18th Century actress,
Kitty Clive.
"I couldn't understand why they did it," he once confessed. "I thought they
must be barmy.
"They would be talking about it all the time and everything they were talking
about was a disaster. It was the last thing I wanted to do."
But he changed his mind after finishing his National Service as a radio
operator in the Royal Navy and pondering what job to do next.

Bobby Byrd, who most of you may not have heard of, has died.
As James Brown's right-hand man he's probably best known as the bloke who says: "Yeah!" in JB's track Sex Machine.
However he was a very talented performer on his own. Check this funky masterpiece.

Farrah Fawcett :'(
US actress Farrah Fawcett has died aged 62 following a long-running battle with cancer.
Her long-time partner, Ryan O'Neal, was said to have been at her bedside when she died.
O'Neal led the tributes to his late partner, saying: "After a long and brave battle with cancer, our beloved Farrah has passed away.
"Although this is an extremely difficult time for her family and friends, we take comfort in the beautiful times that we shared with Farrah over the years and the knowledge that her life brought joy to so many people around the world."
The former Charlie's Angels star's battle against illness had been the focus of a moving documentary released just weeks before her death.
The actress was given the last rites on Wednesday at her hospital bed in Los Angeles.
Her publicist, Allen Miller, wrote on the actress's official website: "I am sorry to say our Farrah has passed to a better place and left the pain and confines of her bed behind. She is free to be the woman we all knew and loved. So few have touched so many."
The Texas-born actress rose to fame in the 1970s through the highly successful Charlie's Angels. Fawcett played the role of Jill Munroe in the detective series, winning a People's Choice Award in the process.
Her fame was confirmed through the sales of posters depicting the actress in a one-piece red swimming costume, a picture which adorned the walls of many teenage boys' bedrooms in the late 1970s. She also won female fans as a result of her hairstyle, with the "Fawcett do" a popular request at hairdressers of the time.
Her career post-Charlie's Angels included a performance as a battered wife in the TV movie The Burning Bed, a role for which she received an Emmy Award nomination. She also received a Golden Globe nomination for the movie version of the controversial off-Broadway play Extremities.

Shame on both counts.
I thought Patrick Swayze made a few good films but I thought his TV drama North & South was probably the best thing he was in.
As for Keith Floyd, major loss. He was one of the first TV chefs to add a bit of humour into what he was doing and as Shy said, he liked his sauce!
-
Agreed with everything above about Floyd. He was awesome..they still show repeats of his show here. At least it seemed as if he enjoyed life.

Poor old Keith.........always made me laugh with his "ah to hell with it" attitude!

What a tragic loss :(
Its a shame that for the prolific recording artist that she was most people only know her for I Feel Love and yet she recorded so many other great songs. The unforgettably funky Bad Girls, the spine tingling cover of State of Independence and classics like Dinner with Gershwin.
Add to that the fact that 63 really is no age to die in this day and age it just adds to the tragedy of it.
-
State of Independence is one of the best songs ever . RIP
