Joe Swail picked up where he left off on Saturday to complete a superb 10-5 first-round win over last year's runner-up Ken Doherty.

Having made two century breaks on his way to an overnight 5-4 lead, he replied to Doherty taking the opening frame with breaks of 66, 85 and 67.

Doherty played solidly enough but Swail seemed incapable of putting a foot wrong whenever he was at the table.

After the interval, a 70 break put Swail closer before he sealed the win.

Swail was thrilled with his win and put it down to changing the habit of a lifetime and working with a coach - Del Hill.

"I think that's the best I've ever played, to be honest. It's only happened over the last few weeks since I went to see Del," he said.

"I don't believe in coaches but I had to bite the bullet and go and see him.

"Within about three shots he spotted the problem, in five minutes he sorted it out. This is the end product."

After losing to Swail, Doherty said the better man had won but said he had not taken chances when they came.

"The turning point was when I should have gone 3-0 up but I made a mistake on the yellow. If I'd got 3-0, it could have been a different story," he said.

"Had I won that, it could have kicked him in the teeth as he was a few ahead in that frame and I was on a roll.

"I'm disappointed after having gone so far in last year's tournament. It's either a feast or a famine."

First-round result:
K Doherty (Ire) 5-10 J Swail (NIr)

63-50 (50 Swail), 72-33, 59-68 (59 Doherty), 37-67 (57), 81-45 (70), 71-40 (71), 0-127 (127), 0-68, 0-110 (110), 92-21 (68), 0-91 (66), 22-113 (85), 38-72 (67), 5-82 (70), 52-72

Hunter polishes off Parrott

Paul Hunter was given a tough ride by former world champion John Parrott before pulling clear to a 10-7 win.

Hunter, protecting a 5-4 overnight lead, started with a 64 in the 10th to open up a two-frame lead.

Parrott refused to buckle though and breaks of 82 and 56 kept him in contention as the pair traded frames.

A missed pot in the 14th cost Parrott the chance to level at 7-7, and Hunter made the most of the slip to take a deserved win with some composed play.

The eighth seed admitted that Parrott gave him a tougher examination than expected though.

"I was confident going into the match and I thought I cueued quite well, but I was 4-3 down," said Hunter, who faces Matthew Stevens in the second round.

"I was glad to go in 5-4 up and I was a little worried towards the end - I'm just relieved to have got it over."

And, looking forward to his next match, Hunter added: "I beat Matthew last year so he'll want revenge. We're good friends, but he wants to win as much as I do."

Parrott meanwhile was pleased to have given a good account of himself.

"The first session was a containment job - the last thing I wanted was to come here 7-2 or 8-1 behind," he said.

"Ultimately my positional play let me down - I was pleased with the standard I played, but I needed to score better.

"I was a bit like an old boxer with good ring craft but no punch. Good luck to Paul, he must have a good chance."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First round result (best of 19 frames):
P Hunter (Eng) 10-7 J Parrott (Eng)

102-7 (102) 49-59 71-17 (71) 61-1 43-65 47-68 58-65 132-0 (132) 73-35 (55) 75-18 (64) 21-63 60-1 45-82 (82) 70-62 19-63 (56) 97-24 (90) 66-0.

Whirlwind suffers blow out

Jimmy White's status as People's Champion is unquestionable.

But after his latest departure from The Crucible without the title his army of fans are so desperate for him to win, White looks to be as far away from claiming the World Championship as ever.

This year was supposed to be different.

His fans came into the tournament filled with optimism that their man would finally take that extra step and win the sport's biggest prize.

And this time their optimism was not based on some hopeful fancy that White would roll back the years and magically tap into his peak form.

Instead it was based on hard evidence.

After several seasons where his powers seemed to be on the wane, White has had his most successful and most consistent season in years, finishing second in the Order of Merit table which takes into account all performances over the season.

He reached the final of the European Open in March before securing his first ranking tournament victory in 12 years at the Players Championship.

It was the last tournament before attention shifted to The Crucible, and White looked to be back to his best, seeing off the likes of Peter Ebdon and Paul Hunter.

White, possibly the most popular player the sport has ever known, was clearly still a competitive force to be reckoned with.

And that is why, in its own way, the 10-8 defeat to journeyman Barry Pinches was as devastating as any of the six finals he has lost.

With hopes once again dashed, his supporters must be starting to wonder if the 41-year-old will be able to keep his game together as time begins to catch him.

And the Whirlwind admitted as much in his post-match comments.

"I struggled from shot one, it was just a disaster," said White, who will be 42 in two weeks.

"I'm played out. Maybe winning so close to Sheffield took a bit out of me.

"When it came to concentration I just felt a bit drained - maybe it's my age, I don't know."

Although it is not the most physical of sports, snooker at the top level demands incredible powers of concentration and stamina from the players, and more than ever it is becoming a young man's game.

The average age of the top 16 is 30, but nine of the players are still in their 20s, while the fresh-faced likes of Stephen Maguire, Ali Carter and Ryan Day are all staking their claim for a seat at snooker's top table.

The sport is becoming more open and more competitive - in eight tournaments so far this season there have been eight different winners.

The exit of five top-16 players - White, Quinten Hann, Stephen Lee, Ken Doherty and Ebdon - inside the first four days proves the old cliché that there are no easy games at this level.

And White, who has amassed more than £4m in prize money over his 24-year professional career, must continually take on younger, hungrier players.

White will never lack for crowd support and can call on years of hard-earned experience as he continues his quest for the world title.

But whether he can keep the effects of the passing years at bay for long enough to mount another challenge remains to be seen.

STEVENS REACHES LAST EIGHT
Paul Hunter put a brave face on his latest Crucible collapse as Matthew Stevens progressed to the last eight of the World Championship in Sheffield.
Stevens rallied from 10-6 and 12-10 down to deny Hunter on the last pink of a 40-minute deciding frame.

For Hunter, it was a bad case of deja vu after losing 17-16 to Ken Doherty in the 2003 semi-final after being 15-9 up.

For Stevens, it was a change of fortune after losing a series of close matches at the famous venue, including his 18-16 final defeat to Mark Williams four years ago.

And despite his latest heartbreak Hunter hugged his best pal at the end of a dramatic match in a show of real sportsmanship.

"Paul was the man to beat because I think he's one of the top two in the world," said Stevens, avenging his defeat at the same stage of last year's event and clinching a quarter-final against Joe Perry.

"To be honest I thought I was going to lose 13-10 or 13-11 because Paul had a couple of chances.

"But he gave me a lifeline and I managed to take it. But at the end it was just like the Taylor/Davis world final.

"We were just going for our shots. Anything that was sticking out we just tried to force the issue.

"At 12-12 anything can happen but I was shaking like a leaf on the last blue because I could have missed anything.

"I've lost some close ones here over the years so it's nice to be on the winning end for a change."

Hunter, who began the final session with a four-frame advantage, messed up his best opportunity in the 23rd frame when missing a match-ball pink.

Stevens superbly potted the same ball into a middle pocket and added the black to keep the game alive.

He clinched the penultimate frame 61-31 before coming from 45-0 down in the decider as Hunter began to feel the pressure.

"I'm going out to get seriously drunk tonight," said Wembley Masters champion Hunter. "But it's not the end of the world.

"I've got my wedding to look forward to next month and I hope Matthew brings out the trophy.

"I'm going to be back here next year and I believe I will win the title one year."

HAMILTON HURTLES INTO LAST EIGHT

Anthony Hamilton reached the World Championship quarter finals for the third time in five years after battling past Joe Swail at the Crucible.
Hamilton, ranked 20th in the world, won five of the final session’s eight frames to beat Northern Ireland’s top player 13-11 and secure a last eight meeting with Ronnie O’Sullivan.

The Nottingham-based player, beaten 13-3 by John Higgins in the 2000 quarter finals and 13-6 by Peter Ebdon at the same stage in 2002, trailed 5-3 in the first session.

Swail extended his advantage to 7-4 but Hamilton recovered to level at 8-8 going into the final session.

Hamilton then moved ahead for the first time with a run of 54 to make it 9-8 before edging into the lead at 10-9 and 11-10.

Swail’s 69 enabled him to draw level at 11-11 but he missed a pink on 30 in the next and Hamilton stepped in with an 86 clearance.

The 32-year-old then made a break of 61 in the 24th frame before clinching victory when Swail left the last red out of a snooker.

Matthew Stevens fought back from a seemingly hopeless position to edge out Paul Hunter 13-12 at The Crucible.

Stevens, who began the session 10-6 behind, took all four of the opening frames to level after an inspired run with breaks of 58, 53, 64 and 73.

Hunter went 12-10 up but let Stevens back in with a missed match-ball pink in the 23rd.

The ninth seed cleared up to narrow the gap, forced a decider and edged a nail-biting decider on the pink.

Stevens was delighted with victory over his close friend but admitted his heart was in his mouth during a thrilling final frame.

"I played four perfect frames at the start, but then Paul came back well and I had to dig deep," said Stevens.

"It was an unbelievable end. We were both going for shots and missing - it was like the Davis and Taylor final.

"I think Paul is one the top two players in the world - he was the man to beat at this tournament."

A disappointed Hunter reiterated his desire to become world champion.

"You've got to believe in yourself in this game and I do - before the end of my career I will definitely be lifting that silver trophy," said Hunter.

"I was trying my hardest but I suppose the pressure did get to me a bit.

"He was a bit lucky, but that's snooker and it's not the end of the world."

I remember him. He was playing the same time as Ray Reardon, Hurrican Higgins etc.

Did you impersonate him OHW or just use his name?

 ;)

I remember Eddie Charlton .... he was a boxer before he turned pro @ snooker.

He was always the token OZ representative on the snooker programmes.

As far as I remember, he was more of a "grinder" than a flare player but what the heck 1

Sorry to hear he's dead :(

Me too. Still, his death has restarted this thread which was previously in danger of being the most boring thread in the history of the universe!

Bring back 'Pot Black'!
