I personally think the VIC-20 is a terrible machine. No question about it being ground-breaking (colour computers of the time were expensive but this was comparatively cheap) but I just think everything from it's display to it's keyboard is badly designed. The VIC chip was improved beyond belief and the VIC II became the base of the C64 just a year later (VIC 20=1981 - C64=1982)

Interestingly, the C64 used to cost Commodore(US) $25 to make when they were selling for $200! That's a 700% return!!!

The VIC 20 was an awful machine but at the time we didn't know any better.  I still spent hours typing code out of magazines into a program that once ran, never worked!! Those were the days

I agree Harri, many hours of my frre time were wasted typing code in that promised a great game, but all you got at the end was "SYNTAX ERROR" or chasing a "GOTO" command that went nowhere. God it was frustrating ???

I remember playing 'Gorf' on it round a friends house - think it was cartridge based ?  The bonus was the multi channel sound and sprite graphics, still beefier than the Spectrum on the video/audio front

Erm - Cough cough - yes I admit, we had a Vic 20 in our house.
oh the hours spent waiting for the tapes to load to play games such as Blitz and Wacky Waiter - what a god send when we started buying the cartridges !!  

I was a bit shocked to see it sat in the science museum in London about 3 years ago though - LOL  :)

Never had one of those, but a had a C64 for many many years. One of my friends had a Vic-20 with the extra RAM thingie. :)

I owned a Commodore Vic 20. .  However, not for very long.  My Father brought it back and exchanged it for a Commodore 64 - which I learned a lot from.  I actually ran a BBS (bulletin board system) back in the mid 80s. . .  The movie "War Games" with, ahh - damn. .  Who played Ferris Bueller again? Heh! That guy. .  That movie is what got me wanting a computer. . .
