Just seen GB getting a silver in the synchronised 10m diving ??? That's not just one bloke jumping in and being marked subjectively, it's 2 of them @ the same time !!

Is it just me or does anybody think that the whole point of the Olympics is now lost. Historically, the sports were some sort of reflection of tasks or skills that the ancient civilisations used in everyday life.

So many of the sports now appear to be devised in order to get lottery or government money and serve no useful purpose.

I'm sure some of our male members have played various games involving olympic type sports and urinals (I believe the tech term is the thingyathlon ;D) - maybe it's time to turn professional and get into the Olympics ::)
(I know I was taking the pi** a bit there ;D)

Does anyone else agree that beach volleyball, although pleasing on the eye ::), is hardly a valid olympic sport. Volleyball, yes, beach volleyball, no. It's simply an excuse for women to bounce around and be ogled.

(Waits for an almighty backlash ;D)

Not a massive Olympics fan - I'm more keen on the football that has just started again.

However - It did get me thinking about which songs might go down well at the games in Athens....

Gold - Spandau Ballet

The Winner Takes It All - Abba

Run Run Run - Velvet Underground

We Are The Champions/ Don't Stop Me Now/Under Pressure - Queen  - 3 different songs from Queen, all rather appropriate.

Legs - ZZ Top - A song for the pretty gymnasts and swimmers...

Don't Give Up - Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel

Jump - Pointer Sisters

Take My Breath Away - Berlin - As well as the sprinters, also perhaps appropriate for those dainty water ballerinas...

The US are currently winning in this year's new sport of "How Many People Can We Get Banned Before Their Event Even Starts". Greece are close behind in second.

Seriously, am I the only one who things this drugs stuff has really put a dampener on the Olympics this time round? If anyone performs well, we all start thinking "drugs" before anything else. Unless athletics cleans up its act, I believe it will die as a top level competitive sport as all the sponsorship will disappear.

And picking up on Shytot's point, I don't have a problem with having more modern sports in the Olympics, but I have a problem with the mega-millionaire tennis, football and basketball players taking part in a competition that was founded on amateur principles and showing little respect for the Olympics. At least the athletes (who I admit are also paid) see this as the ultimate prize in their sport.

Apparently they are looking to get tiddlywinks in to the Olympics-and I am being serious!
I know all the new sportss give us xtra to watch-which is good, but it is definately going too far.Diving is fine-synchronised diving-absolutely no need.Ditto solo synchronised swimming!!!!!!?????What??
I think it's cack that we can't have a soccer team because we compete as seperate countries rather than GB.
I don't really understand why in some sports ie Boxing there are amateur and proffesionals, and then the pro s cannot take part, but in sports such as soccer and Basketball,it is the top pros that take part????

That has me totally flumoxed too andrea....

Professional soccer players can take part, but not professional boxers??? In terms of the Olympics, I would rather see ONLY those sports where the competitors earns a prize for a top placing, rather than a weeky wage for taking part. No idea whether this would work or not - I do not know enough about how sport is funded really.

On a slightly different tack, do you think that althletes like swimmer Eric the eel from Sydney should be taking part? Many athletes train for years to achieve the qualifying standard, but if they miss it by a split second they miss out, whereas Eric was given some sort of "by" into the games.

Don't get me wrong, I felt that seeing him compete for pride rather than medals was refreshing and far more in tune with the original Olympic ideal than the US basketball "Dream Team" for example, but I would like to know how others feel about this?

Are we seeing anything like Eric, in Athens, this time around?

[PS - did anyone else give a little cheer when the Dream Team lost yesterday?  ;D]

I thought Eric wasn't taking part cos he had the wrong type of passport or summat? :-\

I don't understand the rules re professional/amateur re the Olympics either.
