We need to find out,but let's hope so,I do agree it can make a bit of a joke of something that people have trained for years for,but we are a nation that loves to back a loser, such as Eric.It is a bit of light hearted entertainment and a change from watching the USA win everything(apart from tha basketball har har)

I have found our man!!!!!!!!!!
Yona Walesi from Malawi is swimming in the 50 metres freestyle later this week. His best time is 32.08 and Russia's Popov holds the world record at 21.64
There are no olympic sized swimming pools in Malawi but there is a resort  with a 40 metre pool and this is where he trains.

Another contender:

From BBC Sport

Don't call me Eric

By Andrew Fraser
BBC Sport in Athens

Roberto Caracciolo did not know whether to laugh or cry when he was selected to run for Equatorial Guinea at the Olympics.

Because, like it or not, he was always going to be compared to compatriot Eric 'The Eel' Moussambani.

Caracciolo's hapless countryman provided one of the most farcical moments in Olympic history four years ago when he struggled to finish a 100m swimming heat.

But the 22-year-old is determined to put as much distance between himself and the Eel Mark II tag when he competes in the 1500m on Friday.

"I don't know if Eric not being here in Athens is a blessing or not," Caracciolo told BBC Sport.

"I guess if he had been it would have taken some of the heat off me.

"At the same time, I might have just punched him and said 'what the hell are you doing, man?'

"But I can't fault him too much. He just did his own thing and, like myself, he jumped at the opportunity that was given to him.

"He did not know the repercussions. Unfortunately it's something the rest of us are going to have to live for many, many years."

Caracciolo has never met Moussambani.

The son of a US diplomat, he was born in Barcelona and has been based in the United States for the past 13 years.

He had a spell living in Equatorial Guinea when he was a child, and qualifies to run for the west African nation - population 494,000 - because his mother Nuria was born there.

While Moussambani did not make it to Athens because officials lost his passport photograph, Caracciolo arrived to find out he would not be able to enter his specialist event.

He had trained to run in the 3000m steeplechase, but eligibility rules meant he had to rely on the wildcard lottery for smaller nations.

To make things worse, the population of Equatorial Guinea are under the impression that he is a genuine medal contender.

"They are saying on TV and radio all the time that they've got this great athlete who's spent all his life in America and is bringing his own coach to the Games," he said.

"So basically I feel pressure from everywhere. It seems like they are expecting this guy to come out of nowhere and sweep gold.

"When I think about it it almost makes me sick to my stomach.

"But I always give 110% and I hope that I can squash the Eric the Eel comparisons."

Caracciolo is a psychology graduate of the University of Albany in New York State, where he was their top steeplechaser and a runner-up in the American East Conference championships.

But he competed in only a handful of 1500m races during his college career.

His plan for Friday's heat is to stay with the leading pack until the 800m mark, and see what happens after that.

"I feel pretty ready and we will see how I finish," said Caracciolo, a budding photo-journalist who has set up his own website - robinathens.mindsay.com - to share his Olympic experiences with the world.

"I hope I don't turn it into a racewalking event!

"Maybe I'll take a dive into the steeplechase pit if things are going really badly. But I don't plan on becoming another Eric and drowning on the track or anything like that.

"I'm not pretending to be someone I'm not. I know I'm most probably not going to get out of my heat.

"I'm going to take it with a sense of humour and still give it my best. My coach told me I should sign a pair of my shoes and throw them into the crowd, even if I come dead last.

"Unfortunately I'm under a magnifying glass.

"I feel like unless I go out there and do something ridiculous, like win or come last with my shorts around my ankles, I'm not going to get any slack cut for me.

"But I can't complain too much. I got a free trip to the Olympics, I'm surrounded by world-class athletes and it's a great vacation."

Interesting to see GB and NI excelling @ sports such as Canoeing, cycling and sailing.
All sports which get little or no coverage on TV and I guess by default get little or no serious money outside of lottery grants. Maybe there's a lesson there for all of our other overpaid and perhaps less commited "stars" in the sports world ...

I wonder if any of these proper performers will appear on the shortlist for Pseudo Sports Personality of the Year or will the BBC have forgotten about them by then and be focussing on .... Tim Henman, Jensen Button, err that's it  ???

Lets hope they get the recognition they deserve, including our local hero Leslie Law- lives in Solihull y'know, like me.I wouldn't have recognised him prior to the Games, maybe I'll see him out shopping now.(probably lives in the posh South of the borough though)
I would have liked to see profiles on some of the lesser known athletes. As much as I appreciate the efforts of Matthew Pincent and Paula Radcliffe-we all know about these
(felt v sorry for Paula today-bless her)

Notwithstanding our successes in rowing; sailing; cycling and horse riding, watching the Olympics has emphasised to me that basically for a rich country with around 60m inhabitants we're fairly nuts at most sports aren't we?  :(

When you lie behind South Korea and the Ukraine in the medal table you know something is amiss.

I blame it all on the BBC and the Licence fee ::)

lol

On the other hand, you might say that compared to some of these other countries, we have interests outside of sport and Communism ... but we're getting there ... but for sport read paying taxes (we're good at that too)  ;D..

I like to think that we might come in first place in the "sense of humour Olympics".  ;)

That's right OHW - the world and european title holder and world record holder, but this one was the medal she wanted. Poor woman, she's distraught.

she looked distraught thats for sure....

we've been playing shots of all the happy and sad things that have happened during the olympics...she was one of the sad ones among others, and give a description of their background and everything they hoped for etc etc...some of them we're such a cruel act...

then some like what i saw last night....well, should'nt even be in the olympics...
one of the worse boxing matches i can ever think of, was on....im sure they'd practiced for only 1 day....one of em' decided to just walk around and look the other way while being hit...walked off to his corner for a breather in the middle of it all, there was continues tripping /wrestling on both sides...then he finally got disqualified for ignoring referee and and just walked around edge of ring with hands down while looking at the crowd....the other bloke even keep punching while doing so.
i think the country's were SYR (syria ) vs AZE ( where ever the hell that is )..and this was for a medal. :-\

i think the temperature's were alot of peoples enemy's as well.

lol @ the boxing

Regarding Paula Radcliffe or any other professional athlete, I have no real sympathy. They've been training for years at one discipline, Olympics? in Greece? in August? hmmmm might be a bit warm then might need to take that into consideration ... ooh and they've gone and put some hills in the course as well !!

They know the score, if they don't win, they're just not good enough !!

The most depressing bit was having the whole 2.5 hours' of coverage unbroken - there were other (more interesting) events going on - OK if you have digital telly with the red button - but listening to the alternative Ant and Dec  (Cram and Foster) waffle on about how the race wasn't over and how Paula would put on a spurt, and how unbelieveable it is that they get paid to talk crap and how ...

ad nauseum.

Am I on my own on this one? ... I'll get me coat then ...
