That was Rebel MC and 'Street Tuff'.
I'm an ape man, I'm an ape ape man, I'm an ape man
I'm a King Kong man, I'm a voo-doo man
I'm an ape man  I'll be your Tarzan, you'll be my Jane  I'll keep you warm and you'll keep me sane  and we'll sit in the trees and eat bananas all day  Just like an ape man

As far as I'm aware, Rebel MC is still alive.  I'll check up on that though.

Photo of Jam Master Jay (Run DMC) has been added.

I have updated the gallery.  Sadly Linda McCartney can't be included as she didn't have any hits (herself or with Wings) in the 80s.

Just added 4 new photos:

Melanie Susan Appleby (of Mel & Kim)
Alan Barton (Black Lace)
The London Boys
Philip Lynott (Thin Lizzy)

If the gallery gets much bigger I will put it on my website instead!!

I didn't know Alan of Black lace was dead.  When and how did he die?  I met Black Lace in Blackpool in 1985 or 86.
I would go out tonight but I haven't got a stitch to wear ...

He was killed in a car crash in 1995, shortly after joining the group Smokie.

Really a late 70s artist but he was still going in the 80s I think you should add Sylvester of You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) fame.

Also Tracey Pugh ("the paunchy cowboy") of The Birthday Party. Nick Cave's first band.
Bang bang, the mighty fall ...

The gallery has been updated with those who had 80s hits (including Sam Cooke and Bing Crosby who died in the 60s and 70s respectively).

Thanks for contributing folks. :)

in reply to the person who thought the rebel mc is dead, he isnt , wot you are thinkin of is that the song "street tuff" was credited to "Double trouble" featuring the rebel mc! and it was someone who was in doube trouble that died a few years back, his name i cant recall sorry.
