British Open 2004
« on: July 15, 2004, 12:05:43 PM »
Just started @ Troon today.

Who do you fancy to win?

Historically Americans have won here

Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods have got to be favourites to maintain the US dominance but maybe Casey, Garcia or Clarke can offer some hope for Europe?

ROW's best chance is with Ernie Els, Retief Goosen or maybe Michael Campbell as an outsider.

Any comments or thoughts post them here ..

hehe

To be fair - Mark Twain's comment can also be attributed to several F1 drivers, since they do seem to spend a lot of time waking back to the pits ;D

I'm with Mr Shytot on this one....

I find Formula One tedious, noisy and boring. But I greatly enjoy golf.

There's so much to admire about golf - the variety and scenic beauty of the courses, the number of different challenging shots that have to be played, and the good manners and integrity that are traditionally part of the sport.

In your post Shytot, you mentioned Paul Casey. He had a fine opening round of 66. It could have been even lower and I was very impressed with his game.

He might not win this year, but he certainly looks talented enough to win a major tournament in the not too distant future.

He's still a young lad - 26 - but he's already finished in the Top 6 of the US Masters, and I think he has the talent to get to the very top in the game.

Tiger Woods seems to be driving the ball a little erratically. If I had to pick a winner I'd probably go for Ernie Els who has such a great golf swing and makes the game look so easy.

For those who don't know a lot about golf or follow the sport much - The British Open is one of four major golf championships or grand slams that are played each year. (The others being the US Masters, US Open and USPGA).

The British Open is traditionally played on a seaside or links course. This year it's being held at Royal Troon on the West Coast of Scotland, about 35 miles south of Glasgow.

Isn't Scotland a wonderful country - green valleys and lush mountains, beautiful fishing lakes, panoramic views, historic castles, malt whisky.....and of course fine chaps like our quiz master AndrewR.   ;)

You don't work for the Scottish Tourist board by any chance ;)
... or the AndrewR fan club ? ;D

The best bit about Scotland are the golf courses - all well maintained and reasonably cheap to play on.

I have managed to play Troon once - it does look much easier on the TV.

"There's so much to admire about golf"

Er, like the tasteless clothing and comedy trousers worn by the professional dullards who play it.?  :D   One of the main thing that puts me off golf are the people who play it*. If I wanted to spend hours in the company of some right-wing independent financial advisors I'd join the f***ing Rotary Club or something.  ;) ;D

I agree that golf courses are often situated in extremely beautiful areas - which is why it is galling that so much of the countryside is taken off limits to the general public and reserved for some well-off folk's pastime.

* Present company excepted. No dullards on this board.  :)

Going by Ian Poulter's gear today - I can't argue with your fashion point ViscDisc ;)

However, I don't think that golf is a rich man's game - any more. It costs no more to play than any other organised sport that requires an outlay on equipment. If you compare golf to motorsport then you are comparing money v talent. Golf has a handicap system which measures everyone's relative performance. If you are good @ golf, you can progress through the ranks and the only limits are those of your own ability or bottle. In many other sports and certainly in F1/F3 the talent is useful but if you have a big wad (from rich dad) you can go straight to the top at the expense of better drivers. The World Rally Championship is also a good example of how the ruling body changed the rules and excluded several excellent (ex world champs) drivers. Could you imagine that happening this week where they say - sorry Nick, sorry Sandy - you're not allowed to play, we have too many people and we have to decide arbtrarily on who can play.

There you go - a stout defence of golf ;D

Thanks for the dullard exception clause too ;)

I have played golf for (too many) years - maybe I was lucky to get playing when I was young - but it wasn't from a privileged background.

That seems to be enough words for this piece - "on a par" ( ;)) with Softcell, I'd say ;D

OK I will admit, I watched the play-off bit at the end of this tournament.

In those sort of situations, golf can be exciting.  :)

I thought that Todd Hamilton looked a bit of a Dullard actually ::)

Yes it was pretty tense stuff. It was a good tournament all round - lots of people had chances to win it.

- a good example of the no name guy having just the same opportunities as the big names ;D

Both Hamilton and Els seem fairly boring as people. The only interesting thing about Els is his name and initial spells eels  ;D and he pulls a face like he's just squeezing out a resounding trump when he tees off.  ;D ;D

However you've sold golf to me, Shy! I'm off to practice my putting at the Krazy Golf course ASAP.  ;)
