The Karate Kid
« on: February 10, 2006, 13:18:27 PM »
God, these movies were woeful, were they not? Evil karate instructors with an obsession with ruining the life of a teenage Daniel-san? Strange characters...

They never succeeded anyway. Daniel-san, under the tutelage of the inscrutable Mr Miyagi, was routinely beaten up in tournaments by guys twice his weight yet always saved the day by adopting the white crane stance, balanced on one leg, and kicking his idiotic opponent in the face as he raced in...

Daniel-san always won the tournament despite being almost fatally injured due to the pastings he took. Mr Miyagi, of course, would always give him a last tip. "Stand on one leg and knock the guy out." Inspired Miyagi, inspired...

While I agree the the KK movies are a bag o' nuts it has to be said they are becoming immortal. Why? Because of the amount of other films that make reference to them. For example in Doctor Dolittle 2 (another heap o' dung)  the good Doctor is chastised by his wife for spending so much time trying to teach a grizzly how to 'be wild' again. The reply he gives his wife is " ....I'm his polish on, polish off guy...".  Unless you had seen KK the reference would go over your head and the sentence would not have made sense. Much like the rest of Doctor Dolittle.

I have this gut turning feeling the KK's will become compulsive Easter telly.

Crapola or not, the Karate Kid continuum has wangled it's way into our vocabulary.

I've seen the damn movie and the reference went over my head too!

Are you publically admitting to having watched Doctor Dolittle 2?  ;D

I was forced into watching 20 minutes of it before convincing my daughter I was serious about burying her alive if I had to watch any more.

Death threats work a treat in this house.

The threat of washing my daughter's hair makes her a tearful, quivering, little blonde pile of putty in my hands. It's the only way I can get to watch the evening news whilst CBeebies is still on.

I think classifying the Karate Kid as a martial arts film is like classifying Babar the Elephant as a wildlife documentary.

I enjoyed it when I was 10 or 11, but haven't seen it as an adult (and suspect it would be fairly poo). And there was seriously no need for the sequels (which I haven't seen).
