Can Northerners ever be posh?
« on: October 08, 2008, 13:09:37 PM »
I was staying in an expensive hotel in Nottingham recently when I noticed the clientelle were markedly different from those you could expect in a similarly-priced establishment 'down South'.

There you would get fellows with floppy-fringes called Rupert walking about with jumpers tied around their necks.

Up in Notts, it was all thick regional accents and couples who looked like "Excuse me chief, but I seem to be considerably richer than yow" character on Harry Enfield.  In other words, sort of tasteless noveau riche types.

I'm not saying which group I identify more with.  :-X  :D

However the question occured to me, is it basically impossible to be posh when you live in the northern half of the country - no matter how much money you have?

Cast your votes now!

PS: I'm leaving it to the individual what he/she defines as 'North'.

Well, I have been told by friends and family that I live "up north" now.

"North" is Cambridgeshire - I moved up from posh Hertfordshire a few years back  ::)

Not quite what I would call "up North" myself.

"Posh" by many people's definition is the "lah dee dah" accent and the Rupert and Miranda names - not necessarily the financial status.

Money can't buy class as they say...

And people tend to associate money with 'poshness' but there's a lottery winner not too far from me who's just as much of horrible lowlife scumbag if not more than he used to be..  :-\

I think you can get decent respectful people with large sums of money, expensive tastes, all the material things they could want for plus good manners anywhere in the country - I guess that's how I'd define posh.

But as Obsy pointed out, it aint necessarily a money thing....

So I guess I'd vote the first option...

Thinking about it, didn't POSH come from wealthy travellers wanting to see the sunshine on thier travels by water, so they booked a cabin on the port side going and starboard side coming back, hence POSH (Port Out Starboard Home) - or am I just confused   :idiot2:  ;D

I realise this has nothing at all to do with the question in hand   :crazy2:

So legend has it, Shreddie, but there's no real evidence that this is true.

Anyone can be posh, wherever they are from. It's not about money,it's about breeding dahling.
I suppose it's just that it's the done thing for posh types to mainly live in and around London.

There are some VERY posh people living in Solihull, including Lords and Ladies, and there are also some complete scutters.
