- What were the main leisure activities during the eighties?

-Where did people meet their partners?

-What type of music do you remember being popular?

-Did you attend dances, discos or concerts, or get into the rave scene at all- include memories!

Did people form social gangs?

-How was youth culture reported in the UK newspapers at the time?

Any help anyone can offer with the above will be considered most helpful! thankyou

- What were the main leisure activities during the eighties?
playing sport, drinking, going to clubs

-Where did people meet their partners?
pubs, discos, house parties (on different nights ;) )

-What type of music do you remember being popular?
punk, new wave, new romantic, electronic, pop

-Did you attend dances, discos or concerts, or get into the rave scene at all- include memories!
discos mainly - most of them were student joints - some were chosen for musical content - most were chosen because they were open late ;D

Did people form social gangs?
Same groups as the music above

-How was youth culture reported in the UK newspapers at the time?
Don't know - was there a youth culture?
Racial differences were part of the culture
Only got newspapers for the sport and the crossword..

Any help anyone can offer with the above will be considered most helpful! thankyou

As with quongle - just my view of life then ... very simple ;D

- What were the main leisure activities during the eighties?Seeing live bands, dancing, cinema, drinking

-Where did people meet their partners?Nightclubs, wine bars, college

-What type of music do you remember being popular?New Wave, New Romantic

-Did you attend dances, discos or concerts, or get into the rave scene at all- include memories!More nightclubs and wine bars than discos. Music videos were still fairly new and were beginning to replace old style juke boxes in winebars. Hung out at RumRunner nightclub in Birmingham with the likes of Duran Duran, Fashion etc. Guys wore make up and more frills than the girls! Saw Japan a number of times and the number of David Sylvian lookalikes was spooky!

Did people form social gangs? Yes. Usually with people from their college or fave group fans. Remember there was trouble at a Secret Affair concert once when loads of rockers turned up.

-How was youth culture reported in the UK newspapers at the time? With disbelief and horror quite often. The Face magazine attempted to redress the blance.

Any help anyone can offer with the above will be considered most helpful! thankyou

Perspective of someone who was 11/12 in 1980.

- What were the main leisure activities during the eighties?

Computers, music, girls, drinking

-Where did people meet their partners?

Pubs, clubs, disco's

-What type of music do you remember being popular?

New wave, Two-tone.

-Did you attend dances, discos or concerts, or get into the rave scene at all- include memories!

School disco's!

Did people form social gangs?

Gangs were very much based around music.  We were the mods and later on skinheads.  You had your casuals, rockers, grebo's, trendies etc too.

-How was youth culture reported in the UK newspapers at the time?

The way youth is always portrayed, badly.

Also, you will probably need some background to the political feel of the times, which helped make the 80's what they were;

The nuclear threat\deterrent, Threads, Public info films
Maggie Thatcher\Ronald Reagan
The Miners Strike
The Riots
Unemployment
Privatisation

Loads more but it is late.  Sure others can add to this.
