5. Kick Off- all versions
6  Speedball 2
7. Lemmings
8. Projectyle
9. Pinball Dreams/Fantasies/Illusions
10 Amos - Not really a game but a game creator(Thought I could write the next jet set Willy 10 years too late)  ;D

There were numerous versions of lemmings although the main ones were...

Lemmings (arguably the best)
Oh no! More Lemmings.
Lemmings 2
Lemmings 3 - All new world of lemmings (AGA only)

10 off the top of my head (no real order)...

1. Superfrog (almost perfect 2D platformer)
2. Stunt Car Racer (brilliant 2 player!)
3. Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge 1,2 & 3 (superb racer)
4. Alien Breed 3D (not so hot graphics but brilliant game)
5. Monkey Island 1&2 (Graphic adventures don't get any better)
6. Deluxe PacMan (PD game but an immensely playable version)
7. Project X (Difficult shoot 'em up - great game)
8. Arcade Pool/Snooker (none of that 3D crap just pure gameplay)
9. Pinball Dreams/Fantasies/Illusions/Slamtilt (Just like the real thing - only better.)
10.  Flashback (Platform shooter with a decent plot and great graphics.)

Have you tried any of the later Amiga games?

Payback (GTA clone)
Genetic Species (3D shooter)
Nemac IV (3D Shooter)
Street racer (Mario Kart clone)
Duke Nukem: Atomic (3D Shooter)

(You can probably tell I'm an Amiga fan!)

@ AndrewR - It's hard to restrict a list to just 10 isn't it?!!!

@ Rubiks - AMOS was so unbelievably brilliant - a great piece of software. I got that program doing things it shouldn't have been able to do and I still mess with it every now and then when I'm on Amiga!

BTW, this is my Amiga workbench screen...

Yes that is Google (running on Voyager 3).
Yes that is a Winamp Clone.
Diamond Box is a free 24bit image editor.

Very impressive Andy !!

I normally played Lemmings on the PC so when windows came along it got a bit difficult ;(
there was a 3D version which was tricky too.

Oh No .. was my fave. I also had a Xmas version ;D

Lemmings 3D = Total rubbish!!! The idea behind using different camera's did my head in!

I don't often have quite so many windows open ;D

I'm afraid you'll need to place a link to the picture instead - it's a bit large and widening the board.

yeah 2D was best - I liked the stair builders and the knack of letting them finish and start to walk before you set them off again ;D

Sad I know  :(

LOL

andyr = showing off!

That's OS 3.5 as well. Haven't got 3.9 and OS 4 is due out soon - but won't work on an Amiga - go figure!

Good list Andy and good pics.

I can't remember a couple in your list, which is a bit disappointing, as I think I had every hacked off amiga game released  ;D

Was Project X and superfrog team 17 games?

Like your workbench screen, and yes it is showing off ;D

Project X and Superfrog were Team 17 along with Arcade pool and Alien Breed 3D. They produced some damn good games.

Like you I had (and still have) almost every hacked game around. There used to be a shop down the road that had a load of Amiga's setup in the back room all running X-Copy III. I got to know the owner and he'd allow a few to go into the back rooom and copy anything as long as we bought the blank discs off him. School/college was another great source of software!!!

My workbench set-up was used in a commercial Amiga game compilation as the basis of selecting games to run under emulation and I also had a game featured on an Amiga Format coverdisc - Textris - which I wrote using AMOS. In the bit of spare time I have I still work on Textris 2 - hopefully it'll be finished this year!

Textris is a bit like tetris except instead of shapes falling down the screen, there are letters. You have to make words out of the letters. There are also bonuses and things that hinder your progress.

The challenge of getting the new version to work on a 14MHz, 2 meg machine is immense. 256 colour graphics, audio, sprites, bobs, animations, the (large) program and a full dictionary have to be stored in that 2 meg. Also, searching through a whole dictionary on a 14MHz machine isn't *supposed* to be fast yet using the shortcuts I've implemented, the whole dictionary search for a full grid of letters takes less than a second.

(http://www.andysplace.fsnet.co.uk/qp/miggy/t1.png) - (http://www.andysplace.fsnet.co.uk/qp/miggy/t2.png)

Perhaps that's part of the charm of the amiga - you are able to do so much with so little hardware.

Loved Lemmings (all versions apart from 3D, what were they thinking)

Speedball and IK+  ;D

You know there is an Amiga emulator for the PC called WinUAE. You need the kickstart ROM from an Amiga, if you buy the CD ROM version, the Kickstart is supplied on CD. Off to play 'Oh No - More Lemmings'  ;D ;D ;D ;D

There is a brilliant PC games creating language called DarkBasic, I've seen rolling demos of other peoples code but will have to wait until Crimble to get the package for myself  >:(

Post by: AndyR on October 29, 2004, 23:56:03 PM
Dark Basic is OK but has some quirks that really irritate me. Not only that, some of the underlying code is quite slow (even on my fast PC) and you sometimes have to go around the houses to end up with the required result.

I suppose the easier it is to write programs the more restricted you become in  how the program works.

I notice that Blitz Basic is available for the PC  - That was AMOS's only real competition 'back in the day'
Title: Re:Commodore Amiga
Post by: AndyR on November 08, 2004, 21:44:30 PM
That's true. Blitz basic was slightly faster but not as user friendly. The one great thing about it was the fact that unlike Amos, it didn't take over your computer. When Amos ran, it ran on top of everything else* whereas Blitz multitasked and interacted with anything that was running - and also could use native Amiga windows, interacting fully with 'intuition' (intuition being the technical name for the full workbench GUI).

Blitz on PC is slightly better than Dark Basic IMO. Both have demo's so you can try them out though.

* = 3rd party additions have made it possible to make limited use of intuition from within Amos.

Forget Games!! The Commodore Amiga was a brilliant MIDI sequencer. The only draw back was that unlike the Atari ST it did not have built in MIDI ports so you had to buy an interface for about £25. Once connected it was a joy to use when hooked up to a multi timbral MIDI keyboard. You could purchase really good software like octaMED and Music X which was packed with professional features. :D  I miss my Amiga A500 for making music :'(

Back to games, I liked the theme tune for Deflektor 8)

Octamed was brilliant - 8 channels of music from a four channel computer! Then along came Octamed Soundstudio which allowed as many channels as the processor allowed - and version 2 is due out soon!

http://www.medsoundstudio.com//amiga.htm - the last version (1.03c) is free to download and works fine using WinUAE for emulation. The great thing is that it can load different format audio files including PC .wav files.

As you rightly point out though, the Amiga was superb computer for midi sequencing but the one thing Atari got right was to include midi ports on the ST - the vast majority of studio based technicians didn't realise that it would only have been neglible in cost to add midi connectors to the Amiga.

Bars and Pipes is still being updated...

I loved making music on my Amiga500, I had a 12" techno/house single put out using Octamed, a home built sampler and midi gear.

Amiga owners seem to be rather attached/loyal, squeezing power out of the machines years after they were basically obsolete!

Couldn't you buy a piano type keyboard to fit over the computer keyboard so you could play music on it?

RIGHT before I got started on the internet, I bought a used Amiga 500 from a friend.  It was much more sophisticated than my older Vic 20 or Commodore 64.  I'd always wanted an Amiga but never got one.  I only used this computer for a VERY short time as I realized the internet was "the way" of the future and moved on.  This, however, wasn't until 1996! :o

beneath a steel sky and settlers were two cracking games on the amiga.  in fact, as mentioned - far too hard to list all of them.  i like that they took the amiga code for sensible soccer and used it for the download version on xbox live now! imagine being able to play against a friend who lived miles away back in the day, eh. . . ! :D

I used to have an Amiga A1200, but that was sold on a while ago with many games :(

I still have my CD32, and a lot of games. . .  Pinball Fantasies, Beneath a steel sky, and who can forget battle chess! James Pond II: Robocod, Lemmings. . .

Too many greats to list, but after a shift on the PS3, I can still go back to 32 Bit gaming and find it more fun!
