Title: All our 80s stars are alive and well in mainland Europe!!
Post by: 80s4eva on March 22, 2004, 10:30:19 AM
I have swallowed a chart book this weekend & being a bit new to this site still apologies in advance if the below has already been covered but did you realise that:-

Bonnie Tyler has just enjoyed six weeks at number one in France with a french language version of Total Eclipse.  I haven't heard this song, is it Bonnies voice just sampled or is she really number one again?

Nena and Kim Wilde have recorded a duet which has taken most of Europe by storm (especially Germany) over the last year, as far as I can see this has gone top 5 in at least 4 countries maybe more

Modern Talking (until their recent split) and Nena are still as huge as ever in Germany with a member of Modern Talking being behind the German Idol show.  Modern Talking are unbelievably popular throughout most of Eastern Europe as well

Germany is also the country where Right Said Fred also started their recent comeback (with You're my mate etc), gee thanks everybody in Germany

Maggie Reilly (vocalist on Moonlight Shadow) is still popular in Scandanavian countries

As for songs that flopped in the UK when released:-

Nick Kamen - I Promised Myself is one of the best selling songs ever in Germany

Men Without Hats - Pop Goes The World which missed the UK top 100 made number 1 in Austria

I am still only at the tip of the iceberg as far as gaining info goes but if there are any groups out there you are interested in, let me know and I will see what I can find out.  I did look for Frazier Chorus but unfortunately it doesn't look like they broke into any other chart round Europe either, shame.

What about other 80s acts, anyone have any further info about who is still big where etc?

Kim Wilde Rocks!...I love her last few singles 2001-02 Loved is excellent dance cover, Born to be Wild 2002 with B side All about me, and of course 2003 Anytime, Anyplace , Anywhere is an excellent song, and what a super hit that was.

Hi!
I am the webmaster of Bonnie Tyler's Swedish Homepage www.bonnietyler.tk
and I can tell you that Bonnie really is No 1 again, especially in France and Belgium.
She is going to release yet another new album in 2005, and I have heard some rumours about it being a blues or a dance album!

Kim Wilde made a great music comeback in Europe, but she was never away from the tv screen. She had her own gardening show on tv and released a DVD with tips on losing weight. Nena had no comeback. She was popular in Germany and Holland non-stop. She also had some other things she did. She wrote books for childeren and recorded cd's with songs for childeren.
Nik Kamen had a comeback in the Netherlands in 2000 with a remix of I promised myself.
Modern Talking where making records untill 2000 and now Thomas Anders has a solo career. Diether Bohlen is a producer, he did some songs for Bonnie Tyler and some german bands. He also brought American Idol to Germany and he was in the jury of that show.
Comebacks are very popular at the moment in Europe. What do you think of a comeback of Vanilla Ice. He had a hit with a trance remake of Ice Ice Baby.
Peter Schilling brought out a whole cd with remixes of the song Major Tom.
Even Elvis is back in the charts with 2 songs. So we are having a revival of the 80's at the moment. And I LOVE it.
