Mini Notebooks
« on: August 30, 2009, 14:38:26 PM »
Thinking of buying a 10" mini notebook but as they dont have a CD drive how do you install apps on them or do I need another PC or external ROM for this?

Also, comes with Windows CE 5.0 pre installed, any good?

How did I miss this thread? Feeling like someone we know with late replies on threads...

Mini notebooks are quite handy and have their place, for installing applications USB stick would be fine but installing Operating Systems you would need to use a USB CD/DVD drive. Windows CE5 is for very minimalistic systems and doesn't do very much but my mum's mini notebook runs great on both Windows XP and Windows 7 RC (much better than Shista ran on a full laptop with three times the amount of power).

If the mini notebook has got 1GB RAM and more than 16GB storage space you might be better installing Windows XP on to it.

Bit late but I agree with David...most of these minis use Atom processors so you can't do anything really intensive on them - games newer than the original pong are out lol - but they are great for surfing around, listening to music, bit of office stuff and watching stuff online that isn't high def. I've got one that is basically a little emulation machine - nintendo, c64, megadrive etc...

You can install operating systems using a USB stick - you don't necessarily need a USB C/DVD drive and I'm dual booting linux/xp on mine.

They aren't a replacement for a full 'proper' computer though!
