Zx Spectrum
« on: March 15, 2004, 18:24:34 PM »
Had one of the old rubber keyed Spectrums. I used to spend hours playing driving games (little has changed), including 'Out Run', 'Turbo Esprit', 'Chase HQ', 'Spy Hunter' and 'Ironman - Super Off-Road Racer'.

Anyone else have a Speccy?

My first computer was also the good old speccy, much better than commodore 64  ;D

Remember busting the keyboard playing Daley Thompsons Decathlon.

Fav games: Match Day 2 ,Turbo Esprit, Technician Ted, Daley Thompsons, also have fond memories playing Trashman and Scuba Dive.

*Goes off to play spectrum emulator on PC

I remember 'Scuba Dive'.

Other games I played included 'Jet Set Willy', 'Skool Daze' and 'Back 2 Skool', and lots of 80s TV-related games such as 'Minder', 'Blockbusters' and 'The Krypton Factor'.

My mate had a Speccy, he had most of those - but do you also remember Paper Boy, Football Manager (with the little stick men), Jetpac, Chuckie Egg and Atic Atac? We broke my joystick on Daley Thompson's Decathlon.

I had an Acorn Electron :(

Keep bringing back the memories, played football Manager to death (Wasn't the bloke that wrote it called Kevin Toms,a legend).
Completed Atic Atac.
Trying to remember the level I got to on chuckie egg, terrible control system.

Acorn Electron, you must have been in the top stream in school. Thats why you have a exciting job lined up in the US and I don't.  ;D

I'd forgotten about 'Paperboy', used to love that.

I also liked 'Hard Drivin', it seemed really advanced as a Spectrum game for it's time, and the similar if different looking 'Stunt Car Racer'.

My first computer was a secondhand 'deadflesh keys' Speccy - 16k with the wobbly 32k expansion (that I kept in place using green insulating tape!)

The old girl served me well for a few months until I got my Amstrad CPC 464. That is a computer I loved and still love to this day. It has the best version of Chuckie Egg bar none - one of the best games ever made.

I wrote half an amstrad emulator on my Amiga ages ago. I say half because I never got around to finishing it but some of the simpler games were playable (no sound implemented though) I remember Roland on the Ropes, Fruit Machine, Dizzy and some others worked really well though.

The Amstrad was where I first really became interested in computers and the first I started to programmes. I got an A* for my GCSE in I.T. for a game I wrote on it (called Treachery)

The Amiga is my computer of choice though. I had a game published on that machine (Textris - currently available in all good TOSEC places!) but it really is an amazing machine that still impresses today. My Amiga (for those interested) is an 040 @50MHz + fpu and 18 Meg Ram. Doesn't sound much but the computer works in a completely different way to a PC so you can't compare. I have a cybergraphics GFX card which allows me to run workbench in 1024x768x16 @ 85Hz, plays mp3's, vcd, and surfs at broadband speeds (but no decent browser available - currently using Voyager)

I'm waffling on now! Suffice to say that Speccy was OK but the Amstrad was my 8 bit computer of choice.

I remember 'Horace Goes Skiing'. Why didn't they just put the Ski shop on the same side of the road as the Ski slope!

Rubiks - A500 1.2? That's what I had originally then replaced the 1.2 Kickstart with 1.3 then but in a switch so I could dual boot either Kick 1.3 or 2.04. I also installed a 'mega chip' device which gives me 1.5 meg chip ram, 512k fast ram and a fatter agnus as well.

If you want to see my current workbench screen then it's here...
